ATLANTA, GA, January 21, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mutabaruka has established himself as a figure of International political and cultural influence, the former of which is rare for one whose rise to fame came through entertainment. He is known as one of the most relevant voices of Jamaica, a physically small yet influentially huge island in the Caribbean. His two weekly radio shows enjoy wide listenership, and his prominence and politics have made him an unconventional yet extremely effective voice of maligned communities.
Mutabaruka is the star of the groundbreaking movie SANKOFA. His other movie credits include One Love, a film starring Kymani Marley.
He was recently awarded Jamaica's Order of Distinction, an hobor reserved for citizens who have distinguished themselves in National and International affairs. Since his legendary debut at the famous Reggae Sunsplash 1981, he has been a highly sought-after performer, lecturer and host of festivals all over the world.
Hosting the event will be the young urban legend, New Orleans native Sunni Patterson. Sunni rose to prominence after a performance of HBO's Def Poetry Jam which allowed her to be the voice of suppressed rage, disappointment and resolve after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the city and left a frighteningly disproportionate number of black people without shelter. Sunni is a visiting professor, performance poet, prolific writer and Griot in the traditional sense of the word.
Opening acts will be traditional African drummer Baba Sola and legendary saxophonist Bilal Sunni Ali, former member of Gil Scott Heron's Midnite Band.
Patrons will enjoy an African marketplace of crafts, books, health and beauty products, clothes, metaphysical tools and gourmet healthy African cuisine.
