Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Katherine Leigh Myers as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

    FAIRBORN, OH, February 02, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Katherine Leigh Myers, Assistive Technology Specialist for the Office of Disability Services of Wright State University, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Katherine Leigh Myers will be featured in an upcoming edition of Women of Distinction's Top Education edition in 2017.

Focusing her energy on higher education for the past 23 years, Katherine Leigh Myers first graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Education in 1994 and immediately began working as an Adaptive Technology Specialist for her alma mater, Wright State University. Progressing to Assistant Director, followed by Associate Director, she is now serving in the capacity of Assistive Technology Specialist, working with college students that have a wide variety of disabilities. Serving as a Case Manager, Myers ensures that each of her students receive the necessary accommodations and that they are all matched up with technology that will help them become as independent as possible. She works one-on-one with each of her students, as well as staff members throughout the department, and is also actively involved in the recruitment and retention of students with disabilities with her co-workers.

"My passion is the students and colleagues I work with each day," Myers said. "It has been, and remains to be, a privilege to work with all of them. I hope that when I leave here, in some small way, I will have touched some of their lives, especially in the knowledge that I have not done anything for my glory, but for the glory of the one who made me, God."

Greatly inspired by her own son, who is both a quadriplegic and non-oral, Myers initially got into the field of higher education because she had recognized a real need to educate students on the technology available to help them live more normal lives. Her son, who is now 38-years-old and now resides in a group home not far from Myers, uses a computer for his speech. Technology has made all the difference.

"He is the reason I am in my chosen career field. I would have never even given working with people with disabilities another thought if it had not been for him and I certainly never would have thought about specializing in assistive technology if it weren't for him," Myers added. "My original plans were to become an engineer, but after my son became disabled, my perspective changed significantly."

In addition to Myers' BS in Rehabilitation Education, she also holds a Master's in Rehabilitation Counseling, Severe Disability, since 2005. Well-known throughout Wright State University for having also taught graduate level courses on assistive technology, she remains very active throughout her community in her down time. She has spoken for several conferences specific to her field, has been involved with various organizations that closely mirror her expertise, including as Representative for the Very Special Arts Committee and Co-Chairman of the Board for Rob's Rescue. Lastly, she volunteers through her church, singing in the choir and holding a leadership role in their Celebrate Recovery program.
