Elite Chiropractic Center of Clayton Supports Patient's Spinal Health in their Weight Loss Journey

Overweight people suffer from back pain partially because of the height of their spinal discs.

RALEIGH, NC, February 16, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Melissa Roccos, Chiropractor at Elite Chiropractic Centers of Clayton, supports her overweight patients during their weight loss journey with chiropractic spinal treatment. Most people know that obesity contributes to the development of coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and colon cancer, however, obesity is a contributing factor to back pain.

The spine is designed to carry the body's weight and distribute the loads encountered during rest and activity. When excess weight is carried, the spine is forced to accommodate and re-adjust the burden, which may lead to structural compromise and damage (eg, injury, sciatica). The lumbar spine or low back is the most vulnerable to the effects of obesity.

A new study on obesity and back pain suggests the culprit is reduced height of spinal discs. This actual loss of disc height in the lumbar spine means that the cushioning in the spine has deteriorated, leaving an opportunity for a disc to bulge or other debilitating back problems to develop.

Researchers at Ohio State University suggests a potential mechanism behind the back pain-obesity link. The research suggests that there may be a close relationship between back pain, obesity, and systemic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is caused by an imbalance in the immune system. This pattern was especially pronounced in obese people, with elevated inflammation more than doubling the risk that an obese person experienced back pain.

Studies have shown that adjustments help reduce the production of two inflammatory cytokines, which can reduce inflammation throughout the body.

"We work with many of my patients who are struggling with their weight," said Dr. Hooper. "Our goal is to support them throughout the weight loss process by helping to reduce systemic inflammation and improve joint disc movement."
