PIEDMONT, CA, March 01, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Renaissance International School (TRIS), an independent Montessori school with campuses in Oakland and Piedmont, will attend the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) in New York City from March 8-11, 2017.

The school will send a delegation of 20 upper elementary and middle school students, accompanied by four faculty members to the conference attended by students from around the world.

The MMUN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. Participating students gain an understanding of being ambassadors from UN member states and they debate current issues on the organization's agenda.

Among the topics that the TRIS students will be discussing include agriculture development, food security, nutrition, advancement of women, and the rule of law at the national and international levels. They will prepare by researching and preparing papers and speeches outlining the positions of the countries they are "representing."

At the conference, they will showcase their knowledge through debates, public speaking and visual representations. Social activities at the conference will provide students with the opportunity to engage with youth from other countries.

"We have participated in MMUN for the past several years and believe it is valuable for our students to meet others from around the world and gain new perspectives," says TRIS Upper Elementary/Middle School teacher, Nathalie Hites. "Understanding social justice issues that affect people around the world is the work of the MMUN. This is our students introduction to becoming engaged global citizens, and is an intensive course in how to create positive change."

Following the conference, the TRIS delegation will visit sites in New York including the Tenement Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Metropolitan Opera, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
