Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister, born 23 March 1929 is an English, former middle-distance athlete, physician and academic, who was the first man to ever run a mile in under four minutes. On 6 May 1954, Bannister made the record breaking run and completed the mile-long race in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. Bannister reached this record with minimal training while practising as a junior doctor.

However, Bannister's record only lasted 46 days before it was beaten.
