Objective IT Creates Complex Database, Military Balance+, for International Institute for Strategic Studies

Military Balance+ offers an easy to use database, with data analysis tools and a bespoke search ability so you instantly view, compare and download defence data anywhere and anytime.

The Essex based software development company Objective won the IISS tender to develop the Military Balance+ database. Objective's team was chosen because of their depth of knowledge and understanding of the project requirements. Objective also provided the IISS team with a series of screen mock ups to assist the IISS team visualise the potential end result.

The development solution consists of three elements: the complex database, including equipment taxonomies; a content management system; and a subscriber database dashboard with data analysis tools. The dashboard queries and compares data across countries and provides visual results in tabulated or chart formats.

The year-long project encountered some challenges in that there was no pre-existing computer system to begin with. It was also important to get the data from the book in consistent format so that we could apply versioning to ensure the latest version was always displayed.
