WORCESTER, MA, April 26, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Each year in the U.S. over 5.4 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people. It is also the easiest to cure, if diagnosed and treated early. When allowed to progress, however, skin cancer can result in disfigurement and even death. "Despite their small surface area, up to 10 percent of all skin cancers occur on the eyelids. Thus, the eyelid region is one of the most common sites for non-melanoma skin cancers. In fact, skin cancers of the eyelid, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma, account for a meaningful risk and can be effectively managed with early detection," explained Balaji Perumal, M.D. a Cosmetic & Reconstructive Eye Plastic Surgeon at D'Ambrosio Eye Care.
"At D'Ambrosio Eye Care we have initiated an even greater attentiveness and increased diligence in examining the skin of each patient's eyelids and delicate tissue around the eyes, forehead and face with the goal of identifying pre-cancerous potential skin cancers in their earliest form," shared Francis D'Ambrosio, Jr., M.D. "We have made facial skin cancer screening an integral part of our eye exams as we believe this is simply a part of our primary care responsibility along with helping patients maintain their eye health and vision."
The damage and risks of sun related UV exposure to your eyes and the tissue around your eyes may be greater than most people realize. When patients experience UV damage to their skin from sunburn it is obvious and they are quickly aware of the damage and thus it is easy to remember to take the necessary precautions. UV sun damage to your eyes can be more subtle, and worse, it is cumulative and can take many years to become apparent to patients. "Many patients who wish to smooth fine lines and wrinkles around their eyes and forehead with BOTOX and gel fillers are actually experiencing the harmful effects of the sun. While I am happy to help them, I always spend time counseling them on wearing proper UV protecting eyewear and sunglasses as it is obvious that they are working outdoors or have a lifestyle that exposes them to a great deal of UV and sunlight," said Dr. Perumal. "Sunglasses for UV eye protection should be considered more than a fashion accessory," stressed Dr. D'Ambrosio, Jr. "There is a great deal of evidence that shows that exposure to UV from excessive sunlight can quicken the onset of eye diseases including cataract, age related macular degeneration (AMD), pterygia-a growth of white tissue on the surface of the eye-and even photokeratitis, a type of sunburn of the cornea, "The risk of these eye diseases along with the increased risk of skin cancers on the delicate skin around the eye and eyelid mean that wearing UV protective eyewear and sunglasses shouldn't be considered optional, but a necessity," emphasized Dr. D'Ambrosio, Jr., M.D.
