Delphian Students Attend Model UN Conference

    MILTON, MA, May 03, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Fourteen Upper School Delphian students participated in the Model United Nations Conference on April 13 to 15 in Eugene, Oregon. This conference fosters students' interest in diplomacy and global citizenship. Model UN participants act as delegates and are assigned countries to represent. Delphian students were assigned to be delegates for Cambodia and Rwanda.

Once assigned, students research their countries to gain insights on the pressing issues the country faces. Students are then assigned to a committee, whereby the group devises a strategy to address their country's problems. These committees debated important real-world topics, such as security, terrorism, and overpopulation. Model UN gives students an educational experience outside of a classroom that pushes them to think critically to solve real issues. By following the real United Nations procedural rules, the conference simulates how United Nations delegates would actually go about representing their countries.

The Oregon Model United Nations is a student run conference for high school students that discusses world issues, such as economics, health, the environment and human rights. Such conferences are held around the world and vary by location. Devising solutions for countries' issues was the newest addition to the conference's program this year. The 2017 keynote speaker was Yashar Vasef, president of the United Nations Association of Portland.
