TORONTO, ON, July 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- ABC News recently covered a shocking report released by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It states that an annual average of 20 deaths, 140 injuries, and $82 million in property damage is the result of fires caused by air conditioners. This is due to over-used air conditioners, whose tune-ups are overdue, becoming highly combustible.
Mehran Khalafbeigi, the owner and Manager of Greenway Heating & Cooling, North York, Ontario, addresses GTA homeowners with the recommendation that they regularly tune-up their AC units to prevent such catastrophes.
"During 2015-2016, we had 12 cases of high combustibility levels in residential air conditioners. We were only able to help their owners avoid danger because the danger was detected in time. We strongly advise that you call in a professional to check your unit and tune-ups at least once a year. Don't wait for trouble to knock on your door", says Khalafbeigi.
Khalafbeigi points out 6 major installation faults that his team commonly sees:
- Poor or loose connection between motor connector and power cord
- The cross-sectional area of a selected conductor is too small to cause overload fire
- Low-voltage plug used that could lead to a short circuit
- Unmatched fuse
- Wrong hookup
- Installation far from a window or in an improper location
"Fire hazards caused by poorly-maintained air conditioners can be stopped with regular checks. Being an HVAC solution provider in the GTA, we have seen that this problem doesn't receive the attention it deserves," says Khalafbeigi. "Remember, the lead technician and the assistants are responsible for professional cleaning in every tune-up project."
As stated by the owner, Greenway Heating & Cooling technicians are trained on all workplace safety measures. The company is liable for all safety checks during and after tune-ups.
