ANCHORAGE, AK, August 16, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Have you ever been on an airplane and wanted to see exactly what you were flying over - but couldn't because it was dark, cloudy, or 30,000 feet away?
The new CoastView mobile app solves that, if you're flying or cruising along the coast in Alaska or the Pacific Northwest. With the touch of a map you can see what any spot on the coast looks like, and you can learn about points of interest along your flight or cruise.
What it is: CoastView is a mobile app that gives you a rare bird's-eye view of the wild and scenic coasts of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, while telling you about points of interest along your flight path or cruise itinerary.
How it's used: As you're traveling by air or sea CoastView shows you the coastal images closest to you, drawing from tens-of-thousands of low-tide coastal images of the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, British Columbia) and Alaska. Each photo is tagged with latitude/longitude coordinates, and the app uses the GPS in your device to show the image and point of interest closest to you. The app can be used offline (without a wifi connection) if the trip is downloaded prior to departure making it ideal for use on a plane or boat.
Who it's targeted to: The app is designed for airline and cruise ship passengers visiting Alaska. Over 2 million people visit Alaska each year, and 96% of them arrive by airplane or cruise ship. Most flights to Alaska depart from Seattle and follow the Washington, British Columbia and Alaska coastlines - making CoastView a perfect fit. Cruises to Alaska follow the same path.
For outdoor enthusiasts and residents, CoastView provides an opportunity to scout and share good places to visit, camp, or land a boat while planning a coastal boating, hiking or kayaking trip.
Problem it solves: Most visitors to Alaska come for the wildlife and scenery. Unfortunately, what most of these visitors never realize - because it's dark outside, or cloudy, or raining sideways -- is that they are passing by one of the most scenic coastlines in the world without getting a chance to really see it.
Ironically, these visitors--many of whom have saved up their earnings and waited decades for a chance to see Alaska's majestic landscapes--are passing right by some of the most spectacular scenery on their way to Alaska. It's a huge missed opportunity, which CoastView solves.
Why it was created: The CoastView team is driven by a respect for the natural world and a desire to share the beauty and scenery of the coast with as many people as possible. Our credentials tell the story: among our 3-person team we have a PhD in oceanography, Master's degrees in environmental science and computer science, Bachelor's degrees in geology and geography, and an MBA.
Why it matters: As our world shrinks, it's good to remember there are still wild places. While we may never set foot in them, seeing them and learning about them as we fly over or cruise by helps connect us a little deeper to our shared planet.
