During the winter months and over the holidays, the dangers of distraction are compounded by slick roadways, heavier traffic and fewer daylight hours.
PIKEVILLE, KY, December 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Billy Johnson, the founder of the Billy Johnson Law Firm, would like to remind everyone that, while it is always important to avoid distracted driving, it is especially important during the holiday season when the weather may create dangerous roadway conditions. Winding roads in higher elevations can be hazardous at any time, but are notably more so when numerous drivers are traveling to holiday gatherings.
"Drivers know all too well that distraction is a growing threat on our roads," Johnson said. "During the winter months and over the holidays, the dangers of distraction are compounded by slick roadways, heavier traffic and fewer daylight hours. In other words, curbing distraction is particularly important as we head into the upcoming season."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as anything that takes the driver's focus off driving and the road, including eating, changing radio stations or consulting a GPS, but using cell phones is especially dangerous. The CDC describes three types of distraction: visual, not watching the road; manual, by physically removing your hands from the wheel; and cognitive, when you take your mind off the road. Using a cell phone while driving involves all three types of distraction.
Statistics from the NHTSA, CDC, AAA and other organizations bear out the danger. The CDC reports that nine people are killed and over 1,000 individuals are injured every day because of accidents related to distracted driving. Further statistics show that distracted driving contributes to more than 16 percent of all fatal crashes; 660,000 drivers use their cell phones while driving each day; and in 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and 391,000 were injured. Studies also show that the average text takes 4.6 seconds to complete, and at 55 mph a vehicle will cover the length of a football field while the driver's eyes are fixed on their phone.
In addition, during the holidays the dangers are not only from distractions inside the car, but from outside. With congested roadways, the potential for bad weather, and far-away destinations, drivers have more than the usual challenges. In addition, DUI arrests and crashes are common over the Christmas and New Year's holidays, indicating that a higher proportion of individuals are driving under the influence during this time.
"We urge everyone to put away their cell phones while traveling and to use alternative forms of transportation if enjoying some spirited Christmas cheer. We want to see everyone safe in the New Year," Johnson said.
