When Cranio changes its name from the Journal of CranioMandibular Practice to the Journal of CranioMandibular and Sleep Practice it's editor Dr Riley Lunn called on Dr Shapira to write the guest editorial in that issue due to his generally accepted expertise in treating Sleep Apnea and snoring with oral appliances.

Dr Shapira was the first dentist to become an Assistant Professor at Rush Medical Schools Sleep Disorder Center under Dr Rosalind Cartwright in 1985. He was a founding and credentialed member of the Sleep Disorders Dental Society which later became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

He has spent decades helping patients suffering with severe Orofacial and TMJ pain to improve their quality of life. He has lectured both nationally and Internationally on the treatment of sleep disorders and TMJ disorders and their common developmental pathways. One of his 1998 lectures on Anti-Aging Dentistry was made into a chapter in a textbook of Anti-aging medicine. Dr Shapira is a long-term Dental Editor of Sleep and Health Journal.
