MONTCLAIR, NJ, March 02, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Foley Marketing Advisors (FMA), a boutique Marketing & Public Relations Agency, recently launched a Virtual Internship Program that provides quality professional experience to Montclair State University students majoring in PR, Communications, Marketing and/or Business. The Program seeks to help those students who do not have transportation or large chunks of time per week to devote to a typical, large-scale internship program. The term "Virtual" implies that the students will be working either from their home, dorm, library, etc... and will not be required to come into an office to perform any of their tasks. "It's a mutually beneficial arrangement. Small businesses need, but can't afford, to hire staff and students need quality professional internships that fit their unique situation" said FMA's President, Danielle Foley.
The idea for the Virtual Internship Program was born when Chanel DeJesus, currently a Senior at Montclair State, emailed Foley directly in July 2017 and shared her desire for an internship in public relations and marketing. Although not seeking an intern at the time, Foley agreed to meet with Chanel. During the interview, Chanel explained her struggle to find an appropriate internship and it became clear that a "virtual" internship was something that would benefit both Montclair State students and Montclair businesses. Chanel came on board as FMA's first intern the following week and has been working virtually ever since. Said Ms. DeJesus, "My coursework requires a lot of time and I have a part-time job to help pay my way through school, so I had little time to devote to a much needed professional internship".
FMA's interns have weekly team meetings via Skype and use Asana, Canva, Hootsuite, Google and other cloud-based platforms for project management and collaboration. In September 2017, FMA signed on its second intern, Sophomore Ciara Rolle-Harris. "I really enjoy interning with a small company, I've received a great deal of quality one-on-one contact with senior level professionals who are readily available to answer questions and teach me things along the way," said Ciara.
Gregory Costanzo, former Montclair State University Director of Career Services said: "Employers nowadays are looking for recent grads with at least 2 years of relevant experience, so internships are necessary for a recent graduate to market themselves professionally. An internship where you can work anywhere at any time can be key in an successful internship experience. Millennials don't enjoy the commitment or experience of working in an office-based environment. A virtual internship is an innovative idea that allows college students to work remotely using cloud technology."
Foley hopes that other small businesses will be inspired to take on virtual interns and is happy to share her experience while helping others set up their own virtual internship program.
