FAIRLESS HILLS, PA, March 08, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Reed Markowitz, a senior student at Pennsbury High School has been working with Pennsbury school administrators to organize a voluntary student walkout in solidarity to the 17 victims of the Parkland massacre and to raise awareness about rising gun violence in our schools and community. The school superintendent approved the walkout and has been working with Reed Markowitz and local law enforcement to work out the logistics of the event to ensure maximum safety. The walkout will take place alongside other schools participating across the nation on March 14, 2018, one month after the shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Some startling facts:
- There have been over 200 school shootings since Sandy Hook in December 2012
- The Parkland, Florida shooting marks the 30th mass shooting this year in the US
- More than 1,800 people have died from gun-related violence this year
- More than 3,100 other people have been injured
"I've witnessed so many mass shootings, too many," said Reed Markowitz, student organizer of the Pennsbury Student Walkout. "We really need to talk about solutions so no one else has to die." Reed has also maintained a large social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and the Action Network website for more information on the event and for participants to voice their thoughts and spread the word.
The Women's March Youth, the grassroots group and organizer of several national walkouts states "We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns. Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November, and many others will join us in 2020."
Students are asked to wear orange, the color for movement, on Wednesday, March 14th and join their fellow classmates from across the nation to walk out of classrooms at 10:00 am and stand in silence for 17 minutes in memory of the 17 lives lost to gun violence at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
