/24-7PressRelease/ - NEW YORK, NY, April 03, 2008 - Porcelain crowns are a strong, permanent, natural looking option for replacing the entire upper portion of the tooth. This is an excellent option for many cases in which damage to the tooth is too extensive to be repaired with other methods such as dental composite fillings, or porcelain inlays and onlays.

Made from specially formulated dental porcelain, porcelain crowns look just like your natural teeth, replicating the color, texture, finish, and translucency of natural tooth enamel.

Many recent developments in the materials and technologies have made porcelain crowns more accessible and more functional than ever. New dental porcelain formulations are stronger and more durable than previous types of porcelain; and new, computerized technologies make fabrication of porcelain crowns easier and quicker than ever before.

CEREC technologies
Recent technological developments in dental tools and materials have made porcelain crowns more accessible, more attractive, and more effective than ever.

One of the most significant of these developments is called CEREC. A state of the art computer aided system, CEREC systems let your dentist fabricate amazingly precise and natural looking porcelain crowns right in his or her office, so you can get your porcelain crown in a single office visit, with no need for uncomfortable and unsightly temporary crowns.

When you have a crown made using the CEREC system, your dentist will first prepare your tooth for the crown, clearing away decay and abrading the surface of the tooth to aid in adhesion.

Once the tooth is fully prepared, your dentist will use the CEREC laser scanner to take a precise 'picture' of your tooth, measuring and recording it in every dimension. Using this data, the CEREC milling system then fabricates a custom mold from a single block of dental porcelain.

Once your custom CEREC crown is complete, your dentist will apply a special, strong dental adhesive to the surface of your tooth and apply your new crown. Any final adjustments will then be made, ensuring that your bite is balanced and your new crown fits securely and comfortably.

Endodontics and porcelain crowns
One common use for porcelain crowns is restoration following endodontic therapy, or a root canal. In these cases, a tooth that has sustained damage too extensive to be repaired with a traditional filling can often still be saved with endodontic treatment. This is a procedure in which decayed tooth pulp within the tooth root is removed, and then replaced with filler material, in order to save the root of the tooth, and prevent further damage. In most cases, much of the upper area of the tooth is destroyed by this, and can then be replaced with a strong, natural looking porcelain crown.

Dental implants and porcelain crowns
Another common use for porcelain crowns is as part of the dental implant procedure. Dental implants are the only full, permanent tooth replacement option when you have lost a tooth completely, and the root cannot be saved.

The first step in a dental implant procedure is surgical implantation of a strong, safe, permanent titanium rod into your jaw. This rod provides a sturdy anchor for your eventual porcelain crown, and also serves to prevent loss of bone mass that often occurs when the tooth root is missing.

After this dental implant is completed and completely healed (a process which may take some time), your cosmetic dentist will fit you for a custom porcelain crown to replace the visible portion of the tooth. This porcelain crown is fitted directly to above-gum portion of the titanium rod, securing it permanently, and leaving you with a beautiful, natural looking, and completely functional new tooth.

In New York City, the offices of Dr. Michael Iott & Associates offer same day CEREC porcelain crown construction and a range of other state of the art aesthetic dentistry services.
