OLYMPIA, WA, January 07, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- An agricultural commission to work on behalf of the Cannabis Producers in Washington State has been approved by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The Washington State Cannabis Commission (WSCC) is defined by a document, known as a Marketing Order (MO). The MO has been vetted by the Washington State Attorney General's office to ensure compliance with the laws of the State.
Cannabis, as an agricultural commodity, is making a substantial financial impact to the states that legalize and tax its distribution; however, no significant research on how to best grow and process the plant exists. WSCC will focus on helping farmers produce superior cannabis with economical and safe practices while educating all licensees, regulators and lawmakers about cannabis.
The WSCC, according to the MO, will collect assessments based upon farmers' sales. Funds are targeted to provide research and education along with government outreach. No funds will be used to promote the sale of cannabis as is common in other agricultural commissions.
The first step of the democratic process to establish the WSCC as the first agricultural commission for cannabis in the US is signatures on a petition. Producers' signatures will indicate their desire to bring a referendum of the commission's formation to a vote of the producers.
The WSCC Action Committee seeks funding for the referendum in the amount of $40,000 which will be reimbursed upon formation of the WSCC.
