San Francisco Dentist, Dr. Ben Amini, Warns About The Link Between Mal-alignment of Teeth And Risk of Periodontal Disease Progression And Tooth Wear

    SAN FRANCISCO, CA, January 14, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- San Francisco dentist, Dr. Ben Amini, warns patients that poorly aligned teeth can increase the risk of periodontal(gum) disease, gum recession, and worsen or speed up its progression. An increasing number of people have misaligned teeth, often due to larger teeth and small jawbones. While removing wisdom teeth, which are often too large to fit properly, can help reduce the risk of problems with tooth impaction, it might not be enough for preventing the overlapped teeth in the front of the mouth, especially the lower front teeth. Poorly aligned teeth are difficult to clean properly and can also put excess strain on supporting tissues, both of which can increase the risk of periodontal disease and gum recession and pre-mature tooth wear.

"When I see a patient with rotated front teeth, I look for excess plaque and tartar and I often find excessive tooth wear and damage on the top surfaces of the mal-aligned teeth, what we call incisal tooth wear. Patients who grind their teeth and have rotated front teeth, often have more severe and irregular tooth wear and damage. This is an irreversible damage to the teeth which may cause more problems down the road for the patient." Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gum tissue that can lead to serious dental consequences. The tissues that support the teeth are affected, and as the condition progresses, bone and periodontal tissue are lost. Periodontal pockets develop, allowing plaque and bacteria to accumulate below the gumline where toothbrushes cannot reach. The infection can spread, and eventually, teeth may be lost.

A recent study, which included 35 years' worth of data, revealed that crowded or gapped teeth increased the depth of periodontal pockets between 0.70 and 1.21 millimeters. The risk increased with incisor irregularities and crowding, including maxillary incisor crowding and spacing and mandibular crowding, spacing or irregularity. Correcting these malalignments can lead to improved gum health while reducing the risk of periodontal disease.
