Grant Allows Commission to Buy Asphalt Recycler

Asphalt Recycler Center in Midland County expected to save money, protect environment

NORTH BRANCH, MI, March 31, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Recognizing the effectiveness of hot patching through the use of asphalt recyclers, the Midland County Road Commission plans to use a community foundation grant to purchase the equipment for a new Asphalt Recycler Center.

The Midland County Road Commission recently announced that it is in the process of becoming the Asphalt Recycler Center for Midland County. As a part of these plans, the commission applied to the Midland Area Community Foundation to help with the initial cost of purchasing equipment and was awarded $100,000. Part of the grant money would be used for the purchase of an asphalt recycler for the 2019 season from KM International.

The commission also plans to build the containment areas for the materials to be held in at the MCRC Sanford Garage location. The ARC program is expected to be up and running this spring.

Once the ARC is in place, residents and contractors will be able to drop off their reclaimed asphalt pavement at the Midland County Road Commission in Sanford free of charge. This will give residents an environmentally friendly and free option instead of taking it to the landfill or illegally dumping on public or private property.

Asphalt recycling is the process of taking reclaimed asphalt pavement, and then using an asphalt recycler to produce a useable material to apply to the roads, referred to as hot patch. Currently during the off season, MCRC uses cold patch, which is meant to be temporary. Instead, hot patch materials are longer lasting treatments, and a hotbox reclaimer enables contractors to use the material all year.

MCRC expects that this program will save costs, help protect the environment, and increase efficiency, and it is predicted to be self-sustaining with the help of residents. This will allow MCRC to fix it once – saving time, money, and materials, along with greatly reducing the need for cold patch.

The city of Coleman, city of Midland, and village of Sanford will also benefit from having hot mix available year-round. In 2020, MCRC plans to purchase additional equipment to improve the finished product for residents and travelers through the county.
