The simple and safe Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block or SPG Block often seems like a medical miracle but is actually a type reset button for the autonomic nervous system, like hitting Control/Alt /Delete

CHICAGO, IL, July 06, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A new paper published in Cranio Journal looks at the amazing versatility of Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) Blocks in treating autonomic nervous system mediated symptoms including Anxiety, Sinus pain, Headaches, Migraines, Fibromyalgia and Cluster Headaches.

Dr Ira L Shapira known for a career dedicated to treating chronic Sleep and TMJ disorders. The article is available at: https://www.sphenopalatineganglionblocks.com/blog/

The blocks were first described over 100 years ago by Greenfield Sluder for treatment of Scluder's Neuralgia or Pterygopalatine Neuralgia.

SPG Blocks were incredibly successful but almost became part of "Forgotten Medicine" when the pharmaceutical industry changed the practice of medicine forever.

Two new studies in the International Journal of Cardiiology in 2016 and 2018 looked at the safety and efficacy of these blocks for treating Essential Hypertension.

The 2018 article by Triantafyllidi H, et al was "Bilateral sphenopalatine ganglion block reduces blood pressure in never treated patients with essential hypertension. A randomized controlled single-blinded study is considered a landmark study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29074041

"MIRACLES ON PARK AVENUE" was published in 1986 is largely responsible for saving the Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block from oblivion. It detailed the medical practice of Milton Reder who treated famous patients from around the world only utilizing these magical blocks. Dr Reder was an octagenarian ENT who had been utilizing the blocks for decades even as the majority medical profession was losing this important tool.

JAMA, the Annals of Internal Medicine published an article by Hiram Byrd MD in 1929 on 10,000 blocks in 2000 patients with almost 100% effectiiveness and no negative side effects for a wide variety of eye, ear, nose, sinus, and headache disorders.

Dr Sluder thought this was so important that he wrote a textbook on Nasal Neurology while he was Chair of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis.

These "Miracle Blocks" have been utilized by Dr Shapira for over 30 years who teaches his patients to self administer the blocks utilizing cotton-tipped catheters.

There are 3 new catheters utilized by neurologists, the Sphenocath, The TX360 and the Allevio but require trips to the ER or the physician office. The majority of patients find self-administration relatively easy.

It is expected that new research on various uses of Sphenopalatine Ganglion Blocks and Neuromodulation will improve the quality of life for many patients suffering from head and neck pain.
