"We are excited about the launch of this first-in-Japan CBD focused shop and cafe. Our customer base has grown greatly in the past few years and many have asked us to expand with a downtown shop," says Michael Bobrove, Founder and CEO of HealthyTOKYO. "This new shop gives our current and future customers a chance to try, experience and learn about CBD in Japan. Our knowledgeable staff are always available to answer questions with a smile."
CBD oil (cannabidiol) is extracted from the hemp plant. Results from years of research with CBD indicate positive effects in a number of health-related areas. It is popular among people seeking stress reduction, pain relief, better sleep and anti-inflammatory properties for skin conditions. CBD can be consumed as an oil, infused into food or drink and is also becoming a popular key component in cosmetics and creams. To sell CBD in Japan it must be produced according to defined legal standards and not contain detectable levels of THC (the substance that can cause a euphoric effect).
In recent years CBD has experienced tremendous growth in the US, Canada and Europe. According to Forbes, the US market alone for CBD is expected to reach US$ 20 billion by 2024. Japan is the first country in Asia to allow for the sale of CBD and products have been available since 2016. The market in Japan is expected to grow exponentially from 2020 as more people learn about the greater availability and benefits of CBD products.
Japan is also experiencing a major growth in tourism with more than 33 million visitors in 2019. With the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the country is expected to see a further spurt to 40 million visitors from overseas. WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) announced that CBD is officially allowed, making this year the first where Olympic Athletes will be able to openly benefit from CBD. The HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & Cafe is located just a 10 minute walk from the New National Stadium, recently built to host the 2020 Olympics.
