IRVINE, CA, April 01, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Macbeth Academy, a non-profit K-12 online school based in Irvine, California, recently launched The Time Capsule Project, a school-wide creative response to COVID-19. Each week, students express their feelings about COVID-19 with a series of short stories, essays, letters, and drawings. The time capsule will be a snapshot into what students were thinking and feeling during this unprecedented time.
Head of School, Kayla Solinsky, sees Macbeth Academy's project as a necessary platform of self expression for young minds. "Our students see what is happening around them, and they have a lot to say. The Time Capsule Project is an outlet for our students to think critically and develop their own voice about what is happening in their lives right now. We provide the prompt. The students take it and run with it," says Solinsky.
This week's theme was hope. Solinsky and her team received dozens of submissions including a short story about a hope spreading creature, a comic strip about finding hope in unexpected places, and an essay about the importance of hope in the face of COVID-19.
According to Solinsky, in addition to hope, stability is vital for students to feel safe. "As educators and parents, we know that children respond well to stability. As an online school, our operations are not disrupted by COVID-19. Classes continue as scheduled. We are not experiencing school closure, and our students do not have to worry about school opening back up. Students interact with the same teachers, see their schoolmates, and continue to participate in school-wide extracurricular clubs. The Macbeth Academy Team feels that it is our responsibility to be a source of stability for our students in this unsettling time," Solinsky states.
The Time Capsule Project will also serve as the first ever Macbeth Academy publication. "We are going to publish these works at the end of the school year so that our students, some as young as six years old, can have a tangible book that they worked hard on and can be proud of. Moreover, our students will have a detailed record of their responses to COVID-19 to share with future generations. These students are documenting history in real-time."
