One of Oldest Charities in NYC Celebrates 250 Years by Honoring Commitment to Serving Community Amid Pandemic

St. George's Society of New York pays tribute to 250-year legacy serving New Yorkers in need by delivering care packages and rent subsidies to most vulnerable

As we sit in the epicenter of this national health crisis, we are immensely proud to carry on our 250-year legacy of assisting vulnerable New Yorkers.

NEW YORK, NY, April 21, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- St. George's Society of New York (SGSNY), one of the oldest charitable organizations in the United States, will celebrate its 250-year history of providing relief and support for New Yorkers in need on St. George's Day, April 23, by honoring its legacy of service during the pandemic in America's COVID-19 "hot-spot."

Founded in 1770 by English settlers in New York, SGSNY has a long history of facing challenges presented to the people of New York City. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it expanded its programming focused on helping some of New York's most vulnerable: homebound seniors.

In addition to ongoing rental support, SGSNY has delivered care packages of food and supplies to some of its most isolated beneficiaries—each containing 2 to 3 weeks' worth of provisions. They have also initiated a "Phone Pal" program, pairing seniors with volunteer callers to provide regular check-ins and companionship as the global health crisis progresses.

SGSNY will also co-host a series of webinars open to the public in response to the pandemic with community partners. These will cover a variety of topics, including US/UK immigration, taxes, financial planning, and organizational leadership in times of crisis.

SGSNY views its work as a community effort and is grateful for all who have helped carry out its legacy of putting people first in what is now the epicenter of the pandemic. In addition to its small team—including one full-time and one part-time social worker—a network of members and supporters volunteer their time, resources, and funds.

"Acts of kindness can have a huge impact on people's lives, especially in uncertain times. This idea has driven St. George's Society since our beginning," remarked Anna Titley, Executive Director of St. George's Society. "While our assistance has evolved, our purpose has remained the same: we are people helping people. As we sit in the epicenter of this national health crisis, we are immensely proud to carry on our 250-year legacy of assisting vulnerable New Yorkers."
