Jet Medical Tourism® Cites Major New Research Published by JAMA Network That Says Bariatric Surgery Reduces Heart Disease Risks

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 05, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Severely obese patients often live with the constant fear that they may suffer a heart attack because of their low physical activity, poor metabolism, and the extra pressure on their heart caused by their excessive body weight.

But finally there is some 'heartening' news for all obesity patients, and especially those who also suffer from diabetes.

A ground-breaking Cleveland Clinic research study spanning 20 years has shown that the benefits of bariatric surgery extend well beyond just shedding excess weight. The study showed that weight loss surgery is significantly associated with a reduced risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events or MACE (including heart attack and heart failure) in patients who have type 2 diabetes.

Correlation between Bariatric Surgery and a Healthy Heart

From 1998 to 2017, out of nearly 300,000 adult diabetics at the Cleveland Clinic. The researchers chose a group of 13,722 patients from among them, who suffered from obesity and had a similar body mass index (BMI). Out of this selected group, 2,287 patients underwent bariatric surgery, and the remaining 11,435 did not.

The researchers found that over a period of 20 years (1998 to 2017), the group that chose to undergo weight loss surgery had a nearly 40 percent lower incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events or MACE. In addition, premature deaths among the surgery group were cut by nearly half.

Clearly, the study establishes that among obesity patients with type 2 diabetes, bariatric surgery is significantly associated with a reduced risk of heart disease.

Bariatric Surgery is More than Just a Cosmetic Procedure

Many people perceive weight loss surgery as a cosmetic procedure to transform their personality. While this is an obvious benefit of this surgery, medical experts increasingly opine that it is time to change the mindset about bariatric procedures. Obesity is a disease, and the current Cleveland Clinic study shows how weight loss surgery can tackle this disease and save lives.

Leading bariatric researchers in the US now believe that by far the number one approach to addressing the root cause of life threatening diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and liver disease that accompany obesity is weight loss surgery.
