"Once we were introduced to the Procovery Model, and especially after we began to pilot it, we knew that fully implementing this Model would have incalculable benefits for the people we serve."
LOS ANGELES, CA, May 15, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The People Concern, a nonprofit organization working on the front lines to combat the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, announced Wednesday that they have added the Procovery Model in their Wellness Program and have trained 60 of their staff members to be Procovery-licensed facilitators. Procovery Circles will be an effective tool for The People Concern's case managers, outreach workers, peer advocates, client attendants and mental health staff to serve clients with a wide range of struggles in times and settings they could not normally provide such services.
The Procovery Model is a proven clinical model that focuses on the process of how individuals with serious and chronic illnesses, trauma, addiction, injuries and loss can build healthier and more fulfilling lives. It is a broad therapeutic framework that can be applied to many aspects of participant care and goes beyond aspects addressed by behavioral health services.
The Procovery model was successfully piloted statewide by the Missouri Department of Mental Health and is now becoming available in Los Angeles County with The People Concern leading the way. Before the pandemic, The People Concern operated two successful Procovery Model pilots at their El Puente interim housing facility and Downtown Wellness Center.
"Once we were introduced to the Procovery Model, and especially after we began to pilot it, we knew that fully implementing this Model would have incalculable benefits for the people we serve. The Model has proven its unique ability to help participants progress in all areas of well-being, and meet their needs in a way other interventions do not," said John Maceri, CEO of The People Concern.
The People Concern is encouraging all staff to become familiar with the Procovery framework, and all employees can choose if they want to attend the two-day training sessions to become licensed Procovery facilitators.
Procovery-licensed facilitators lead a group of three or more participants in trauma informed, recovery based activities to help participants focus on their strengths, their future hopes and their collaboration with others.
Before the global health pandemic, one program participant found the groups to be so valuable and helpful that he continued to attend the Procovery groups on-site even after being permanently housed.
"Procovery Institute is pleased to expand our collaboration with The People Concern agency-wide to bring Procovery to those they serve. We are equally pleased that The People Concern has opted to offer Procovery Circles as an added resource for staff, who are working under unprecedented conditions to not only save lives, but to transform them," said Kathleen Crowley, Co-founder of The Procovery Institute and Creator of Procovery.
The People Concern continues to comply with safety guidelines set out by Los Angeles County in response to COVID-19 and is exploring conducting the Procovery Model via video and teleconferencing to maintain social distancing measures. As of May 11, The People Concern began hosting Procovery Circles for all staff via ZOOM in order to build resiliency and provide a safe space for staff to express, connect and gather support during these uncertain and unprecedented times.
