"A baby born with FASD will suffer intellectual and developmental disabilities for the rest of their lives due to something that is completely preventable." Spencer Munns
ORLANDO, FL, October 30, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The law firm of Bogin, Munns & Munns welcomes eligible students to apply for its Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Scholarship. Every year, the firm awards $2,500 to a deserving student.
The deadline for entries for the 2020 scholarship is December 15, 2020.
The Impacts of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a term used to describe a range of physical and cognitive effects and conditions that an infant can suffer when their mother drank alcohol during pregnancy.
FASDs are the leading cause of intellectual and other lifetime disabilities and are preventable if a woman does not drink alcohol during pregnancy.
One in 20 children is affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Eighty percent are un- or misdiagnosed. The typical facial features that were often associated with alcohol exposure in the past are only present in 5-10% of those on the spectrum, so for many, it is an invisible disability.
Bogin, Munns & Munns is committed to bringing awareness of FASD to the community. It is a mission about which they are passionate, and one that affects members of the law firm on a very personal level. Law firm partner Spencer Munns and his wife Lindsey added to their family by adopting two kids who were impacted by FASD.
Building Awareness of FASDs Through the Firm's Founding Principles
Since 1979, the law firm of Bogin, Munns & Munns has served its clients using the firm's founding principles of respect, dignity, and fairness as a guide. Partners at the firm soon developed a desire to carry their passion for these principles out into the community and to share it with those who seldom receive the benefit of these common considerations.
Toward this end, Bogin, Munns & Munns created its Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Scholarship. They see this effort as an opportunity to draw awareness to a portion of the population that suffers from egregious unfairness and lack of respect and dignity before their lives even begin. Furthermore, the law firm hopes to attract students with an interest in FASDs to access the higher education that will enable them to help those afflicted with the disorder.
"We have a driving interest in bringing fairness to victims, and we could not think of any victim more deserving of our efforts than a newborn child," said Spencer Munns, Partner at Bogin, Munns & Munns. "A baby born with FASD will suffer intellectual and developmental disabilities for the rest of their lives due to something that is completely preventable."
"If we can draw awareness to the risks and dangers of alcohol exposure to the unborn fetus with this scholarship and help a deserving student fulfill their college education at the same time, we know our efforts will be well placed."
How to Apply for the Scholarship
Besides meeting the eligibility criteria and submitting an application, applicants will need to write and submit a 1,000-word essay on the following topic:
In what ways has Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder affected you or why do you have a particular interest in the topic?
How have these challenges or your interest in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder shaped the future you see for yourself?
Please make sure to write about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder ("FASD") as opposed to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome ("FAS"). FASD is commonly referred to as an "invisible disability" that may affect as many as 5% of newborn children. There is quite a bit of research and awareness around FAS. Unfortunately, children are born with FASD much more frequently than those born with FAS.
