Take The Lead & The Center For Women in Law Launch 'Powerful in 2021: Competence, Confidence, and Intention For Women in Law' Workshop

The three, two-hour sessions will begin on March 17, 2021 at 1 PM ET and continue at the same time on March 24 and 31, 2021. Through learning about and identifying existing sources of power, participants will be given tools to achieve their career objectives, whether it's landing a management role, building a client base, or snagging an assignment that will position them well for the future. "Our aim for the workshop is that every course participant walks away with information they can immediately use to advance their career," notes Susan Blount, Center for Women in Law's president-elect. A nationally recognized leader in diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, Blount served as General Counsel of Prudential Financial for ten years. She also previously served as an Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellow at Harvard University.

The classes were designed to focus on women lawyers who are 5-10 years into their professional career. It will also take into consideration the unique needs of women of color. "We were intentional about this," says Blount, "because the numbers bear out that our industry needs to do a better job at getting more women of color in leadership positions."

A new report for the American Bar Association (www.americanbar.org), "Left Out and Left Behind: The Hurdles, Hassles, and Heartaches of Achieving Long-Term Legal Careers for Women of Color", underscores Blount's comments. Dr. Destiny Peery, the lead researcher and the study's author, notes this and other research make clear that the legal profession continues to fail at retaining women of color. "Stubborn barriers to advancement resulting from the traditional requirements of success in legal practice, and an exclusive professional culture, continue to reflect a narrow set of norms, assumptions, and expectations at odds with an increasingly diverse world," says Dr. Peery.

Powerful Learning
Participants will learn from a wide range of diverse female leaders in law, and meet peers with similar challenges, while strengthening their professional network.

Course objectives will help women to:

• Become the CEO of their own life by identifying what differentiates them (points of power) in order to effectively demonstrate value
• Master commanding conversations with intention by setting the agenda and defining the terms
• Rethink power in a way that better suits everyone (not just women), shifting to the generative "power to" instead of the traditional and oppressive "power over"
• Use course teachings to take the lead with confidence, authenticity, intentionality, and joy.
