Author Erika Obando (Without a Voice) Celebrates Son's Graduation and Breaking the Cycle of Abuse

    TALLAHASSEE, FL, May 22, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When Cristian Chavez receives his degree in Media Communications from Florida State University this Saturday, he will be surrounded and supported by family. If that sounds like any ordinary family, his mother's recently released book clarifies the differences.

"Without A Voice: A Woman's Journey to Resiliency" www.ErikaObando.com is the true story of Erika Obando's childhood, filled with trauma, being smuggled from Colombia into the United States (and then deported) twice, physical and sexual trauma and a daily void of any level of security or dignity.

You only have to meet her son Cristian to know that she more than succeeded at breaking the cycles of abuse that impact so many. Erika created a loving, joyous, all-things-that-are-boy fun for her only child; applying the mental, emotional and physical changes she taught herself in becoming an authentic victor.

"My mother is my role-model and she made a lot of sacrifices to get me where I am today," Cristian says without hesitation. In fact, Erika's book has been acclaimed for its life changing inspiration especially since her story is all true life events. Today, Erika is also an international and national speaker (TEDX), renowned artist (works displayed at major buildings) and she continues to inspire men and women as a speaker and on Facebook, Instagram and other social media. "My mom and I are really close and most of the time we are confused for siblings," laughs her son.

Cristian openly shares that his gratitude list includes his mom, his extended family, Professor Kirby Kander / FSU Media Department and Seminole Productions which is part of the College of Communication and Information. He credits his well-rounded education when asked about landing a position with the upcoming XXXII Olympic Games being presented in Tokyo this summer to the constant support of his mom, Dwayne and everyone who has believed in him all along.

"Some people come from tough circumstances, but it is up to you to decide how it ultimately defines you," reflects Erika. Using various techniques, many that are my own, I chose a loving heart and a determined attitude toward success as I raised Cristian. Breaking a cycle is a huge challenge but it becomes your most powerful tool to create a joyous life." With a beaming smile she adds, "I am grateful for having accomplished many goals but none will ever be greater than having had the gift of being a parent." Becoming serious she adds, "I hear from women around the world who are reading about my journey and making positive life choices. They are learning that you can go from being a victim to becoming victorious and this is what I want to help people achieve."
