"I never knew I would learn the real meaning of service by simply listening to a 95 year old lady talk about her life."
MCKINNEY, TX, September 30, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Community leadership is often about service and volunteerism, and Emily Eason showcases those qualities in spades. The University of Maryland student is the recipient of the Community Leadership Scholarship from Underwood Law Office, created to highlight and reward young people who help improve local communities.
Eason wrote her winning essay about a particular experience she had while volunteering with Seabury Resources for Aging. While the usual job was renovating houses that needed organization or cleaning, Eason noted that the home of a woman she calls Mrs. Jefferson practically needed no work done at all.
After wondering why her team was even there, Eason realized an important lesson.
"I had tried for years to find fulfillment as a public servant with organizations that would allow me to directly bring about some sort of visible change in society," she writes. "I never knew I would learn the real meaning of service by simply listening to a 95 year old lady talk about her life."
Mrs. Jefferson, like many elderly folks, just needed someone to listen to her, to provide a communal and personal connection, and show her that she still matters.
Eason says that she will take that lesson with her through all her other volunteer ventures, such as continued work with Seabury, campus cleanup with pre-law fraternity Phi Alpha Delta, or raising funds for Her Justice with Empowering Women in Law UMD.
Emily Eason is the embodiment of a strong community leader, and the Underwood Law Office is proud to contribute to her education through its $1,000 scholarship.
