"Regardless of this recovery path we have been down together, (my family) has always offered me a magnitude of love I continuously strive to extend to the world around me."
ATLANTA, GA, November 02, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lauren Koops, 20, of Cypress, TX, and a sophomore at the University of Texas, was awarded the John Foy & Associates 2021 Survivor of a Car Accident Scholarship. The $1,000 award is part of the law firm's efforts to help young people succeed at school despite an automobile accident setback.
Koops was struck by a car while crossing the road near her house. The resulting injuries, including a traumatic brain injury (TBI), caused her to miss her high school graduation. While she was in the hospital unconscious or undergoing one of her surgeries, college classes started, and since she couldn't attend, UT Austin revoked her school admission.
Koops was an International Scholastic Silver Medalist with detailed plans for her future. However, following that fateful day on June 1, 2020, she had to rethink her plans. In her essay, Koops wrote that she was overwhelmed with disappointment and shame in herself. She wondered if surviving meant that all she had to offer the world was wasted potential.
Today, she's rediscovered herself and has taken pride in her physical recovery. She credits her mom, friends, and family as her "most cherished blessings."
"Regardless of this recovery path we have been down together, they have always offered me a magnitude of love I continuously strive to extend to the world around me," Koops said in response to interview questions.
That love has brought her to her new life's passion, telling stories. As a journalism major at UT, Koops wants to use her second chance at life to travel and tell stories about the people she meets. She strives to uncover a collective sense of belonging that unites all of us.
"Where could our world go if we all knew this unity?" she asked rhetorically. "Are we more alike than we are different?" Koops believes she can uncover the answers to these questions as she travels the wide world to meet new people and experience their unique cultures.
"I want to see all that I can and share it with those who may not have the opportunity."
