"I remember my lack of hair, constant nausea, purple bruises, and the years of schoolwork done on a hospital bed."
MIAMI, FL, November 04, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Miami-based injury law firm Chalik & Chalik has announced the winner of its Cancer Survivors Scholarship for 2021. Zinedine Hoque, the winning entrant, will receive $1,000 toward their education at Cornell University.
Hoque is a survivor of childhood cancer, due to which she spent a total of eight years in and out of hospitals. "I remember my lack of hair, constant nausea, purple bruises, and the years of schoolwork done on a hospital bed," she writes in her winning essay.
Though Hoque's parents, like most of us, willed their child to move on and put the experience behind her, she was unable to get the thought of helping others out of her head. She decided to dedicate her life to cancer research, working to alleviate the suffering of others afflicted with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Hoque joined a biological research program in high school, reaching out to her own childhood oncologist, Dr. William Carroll. Head of a lab at NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Carroll greeted her request with enthusiasm. Thus began Zinedine Hoque's journey toward a career in cancer research, science, and medicine.
The child of Muslim immigrants, Hoque cites her parents' dual perspectives of Islamic ideals and Western medicine as huge influences on her outlook for healing.
"It is important to me to contribute my background as a child of Muslim immigrants to the field of science," Hoque said to Chalik & Chalik representatives. "There needs to be more representation of different viewpoints and ideals in Western medicine because people from different cultures and religions have many interpretations of healing."
This is not the first award that Hoque has won. Though she cites the cancer research itself as the true reward, Hoque has also captured the Semifinalist Award from the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia Program at York College and third place in the NYC Science and Engineering Fair at the City College of New York.
Chalik & Chalik is proud to award this promising young scholar with $1,000 toward her clearly bright future.
