BETHPAGE, NY, November 09, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The 13th annual Bethpage Turkey Drive is scheduled to take place November 19, 2021. Last year, organizers were elated to receive over $18,000 in donations and distribute 3,157 turkeys. Now, they hope to increase that amount by asking the community to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items, grocery store gift cards, and cash donations.
All donations benefit Island Harvest, one of Long Island's food banks. The organization was founded in 1992 and helps those experiencing food insecurity. Island Harvest distributes donations to its network of over 570 food banks on Long Island. It feeds over 300,000 Long Islanders each year.
Food insecurity is a problem on Long Island, affecting millions
City Harvest reports that COVID-19 hit low-income neighborhoods hard. On Long Island, one in three children experience food insecurity. Of the 2.5 million New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet, 1.2 million don't know where their next meal is coming from. This is nearly a 38 percent increase from last year.
Job losses, quarantine, and the virus itself prevent many people from finding full-time work. Many New Yorkers juggle multiple jobs and still experience food insecurity. Island Harvest hopes to alleviate some of that anxiety this holiday season.
