Menorah in the D Goes Hybrid with new activities in person at Campus Martius and Virtually

    DETROIT, MI, November 19, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "We are going forward to bring everyone together again as we light the Menorah in downtown Detroit," said Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov, vice president of Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan. "This year's event will be downtown in-person and virtually on zoom."

The 11th Annual Menorah in the D takes place November 28th at 5 p.m., and after last year's virtual-only event due to the pandemic, this year it is exciting to be able to have the opportunity to bring everyone back downtown to Campus Martius or join via livestream. The in-person event begins at 5 p.m. and the livestream begins at 5:30, airing on the Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan Facebook and website.

This past year Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan has brought the community together virtually and when able in person for all the holidays. Shemtov, knew the celebration of lighting the Menorah would also need to bring everyone together and offer individuals the option to attend in-person at Campus Martius or to join virtually via livestream.

The annual event usually sees thousands of people gather in Downtown Detroit for the festivities and the lighting of the massive 26-foot menorah. The event is put on in partnership with the Federation, The Shul and Chabad in the D, among others.

Viewers will be greeted by community leaders and dignitaries and Torch Ceremony with honorees from Detroit & around the world. Then following the lighting of the Menorah an after Party on Zoom bringing the community together to share their lighting family celebrations together. All of these events begin live in-person at 5pm and virtually at 5:30pm followed by the Zoom after party approximately at 6:30 p.m.

A big hit from last year were the at-home lamplighter kit, which includes Chanukah guide, candles, special lighter, treats, crafts, gelt, postcards and a menorah. These kits can be reserved now for pickup closer to the event at menorahinthed.com

"Being together, the spirit of the light of Chanukah and being in downtown Detroit lighting that menorah in the center of the city is something truly invigorating," The one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life steel and glass Menorah, was designed by renowned local artists, Erik and Israel Nordin of the Detroit Design Center and will be put into place on November 22nd and will remain up until January 3rd. "On each of the eight nights of Chanukah, we add another candle – generating more and more light. Like a flaming candle, all you need to do is touch another person with an act of kindness and sincerity and their flame will be ignited as well. One candle at a time, one soul at a time, the world becomes a brighter, warmer place, expressed Shemtov.
