Dr. Kochilas' article, "Vagus-nerve stimulation paired with tones for tinnitus suppression: Effects on voice and hearing", was published in the April 2020 edition of Laryngoscope – Investigative Otolaryngology. The research highlighted an urgent need in the scientific and medical communities to develop treatments to mitigate chronic tinnitus and provide treatment options for noise-induced hearing loss. The Veterans Administration ranks hearing loss and tinnitus as the number one and two service-related disabilities affecting military veterans. Those who were exposed to intense blast and noise trauma during the Middle East conflicts have been particularly affected. The targeted procedures outlined in the research represent an important contribution to the scientific literature and its use in patient treatment. The application has the therapeutic benefit of tinnitus suppression in humans.
Helen Kochilas, Au.D, is a fully licensed Georgia audiologist practicing at North Atlanta ENT & Allergy. She is an alumna of Wayne State University's professional doctor of audiology program.
