$2,500 Ben Crump Law School Scholarship Goes to Stephen Neilson

The Harvard Law student's winning essay highlighted the need for mentorship in law school, especially for future lawyers of color.

"Neilson plans to honor those who have come before him by becoming a mentor himself."

WASHINGTON, DC, January 18, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "We need more lawyers of color," writes Stephen Neilson in the essay that won him the $2,500 Ben Crump Law School Scholarship. Neilson's essay paid homage to the many people in his life who have propped him up and propelled him to greatness: his family members who moved to America from Jamaica, former colleagues at Morehouse College, and Black/minority predecessors in the legal field.

"While they were not direct mentors for me, they have functioned indirectly in this field to show me what is possible," writes Neilson about advocates and activists Heman Marion Sweatt and George Lewis Ruffin.

Neilson plans to honor those who have come before him by becoming a mentor himself. "In my first year at Harvard Law, I will join and encourage my classmates to join a student-led organization called Dear Future Colleague as a Mentor," he writes.

This is not the only way that Neilson works to increase Black and POC representation in the legal field. He is a current Student Attorney with the Harvard Defenders, is actively involved in Harvard's Black Law Students Association 1L Committee, offers LSAT tutoring, and is an Admissions Fellow at the law school.

Stephen Neilson is a prime example of excellence in academia. His path toward becoming an attorney, his mentorship, his humility, and his sense of purpose all make him perfect for Ben Crump's Law School Scholarship. As for the future, Neilson's plans include moving back to the South and becoming a fierce advocate for his communities.
