"Alvarado's story is one of resilience, courage, determination, and motivation."
GREENVILLE, SC, January 18, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- This year's recipient of the George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers Veteran and Military Family Scholarship is Alexis Alvarado. She is pursuing a degree in Business Administration with an eye toward becoming a business law attorney in the future. Her winning essay covered the subject of her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its effect on her ability to study.
"I joined the U.S. Navy in 2011. I knew that I would enlist from an early age because I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps just as he had followed his father's footsteps," Alvarado writes.
During her time in the Navy, she certainly lived up to her heritage. Alvarado became a Corpsman, completed Advanced X-Ray Tech C School (first in her class), earned two Associate's Degrees, and was recognized by her superiors as Sailor of the Month, Bluejacket of the Quarter, and Bluejacket of the Year.
However, her life's trajectory was drastically altered in 2015. "I was assaulted, and my life was forever changed," she writes. Following her assault, she was diagnosed with PTSD, had trouble keeping up her grades, and gave up her dream of becoming a doctor.
The stress and anxiety was so bad that she was unable to attend classes, and her brief pursuit of a beauty school degree was also hampered by PTSD. Now, Alvarado is completing her bachelor's degree online at Western Governors University. She plans to study for the LSAT and become a Business Law attorney after graduation.
Alvarado's story is one of resilience, courage, determination, and motivation. George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers is proud to award her its $1,000 scholarship.
