MODENA, ITALY, January 28, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For the first time in history, the production of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena has exceeded its goal of 100 million liters certified in a single year.
"It is a historic moment because never before has our industry managed to exceed the threshold of 100 million liters," stated Mariangela Grosoli, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. "The fact that such a record was met amid an unprecedented global economic situation further emphasizes its material and symbolic value. At a time when international relations are at a standstill, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena shows its ability to react and to look to the future with confidence."
A symbol of the European and Italian food excellence in the world, a Protected Geographical Indication of the European Union since 2009, today Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is appreciated in more than 120 countries in the world. The USA alone represent about the 27% of the total consumption.
The Consortium has also launched a digital campaign to support monitoring, surveillance and repression of fraud and counterfeiting of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena at a global level.
"When we realized that the traditional methods of carrying out the work of protection and vigilance were no longer adequate in the current marketplace, we decided to change paradigm," explains Federico Desimoni, Director of the Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. "After initial studies, we were able to activate new tools to allow us to extend our global vigilance and repression of fraud with incredibly quick turnaround times. In this way we have transformed the crisis into a great opportunity. New important tools that will permit us to monitor the market, while we will continue to communicate about the importance of carefully reading the label when buying, looking for the full name "Aceto Balsamico di Modena" and for the yellow and blue logo of the Protected Geographical Indication, guarantee of the authentic, European protected, product."
These surveillance tools not only provide globally monitoring of the digital world, but also allow the Consortium to intervene by confirming product authenticity and the ability to remove products that violate the intellectual property rights of the Consortium.
For example, in Q4, the program analyzed 8,700 online listings related to Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI across 43 different platforms. These listings, published by 2,967 sellers, at the time of data processing generated a total of 169,251 estimated sales for a total turnover of €3,331,900.63. Within these, 236 listings across 6 different platforms from 81 different sellers were identified as illegitimate and violated the rights of the Consortium. Interventions were immediate and 234 of the listings were removed with the remaining 2 having corrections being made to the initial listings.
On a national level, the monitoring involved 8,800 digital points of sale at over 77 large-scale retail chains operating in Italy which detected 179 advertisements referring to incorrect wording, labels or products.
The project "Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, the Original" is focused on the US market and financed by the European Union, to promote the added value of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, in terms of authenticity, safety, traceability, and labelling guaranteed by the European trademark protection. The campaign aims to enhance the competitiveness of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena across the United States.
