"The nurses there told me that I shouldn't have been able to walk in that day, let alone be alive."
ATLANTA, GA, April 06, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The John Foy & Associates Strong Arm Leukemia Scholarship is designed to highlight, uplift, and amplify the voices of those who have been affected by this aggressive form of cancer. This year, the firm is honored to award Timothy Tusick the $1,000 prize.
Tusick, ranked in the top five wrestlers in his state during high school, was diagnosed with leukemia in March of 2019. When his Kent State University campus nurses sent him to the emergency room, he was told that he was in dire condition.
"The nurses there told me that I shouldn't have been able to walk in that day, let alone be alive," he writes in his winning essay. "I had 1⁄4 the amount of blood a normal person should and my spleen was bigger than a football."
Doctors told Tusick that he would be unable to exercise again and that his recovery would take years. However, his fighting spirit didn't take that as an answer. "By September 2019, five months after treatment began, I was running five ks to raise money and developed a habit of doing at least 100 push ups every morning."
Tusick went on to run 5k races and speak on behalf of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, raising over $900,000 to help the society on its mission to fund cancer research. In fact, he was the organization's Honored Hero of 2021.
After graduation, Tusick plans to use his business degree as a manager before starting his own business. However, he told representatives of John Foy & Associates that this is not the extent of his life's plans. "Another goal I have is to become a motivational speaker," he said. He plans to talk about his experience with leukemia to help encourage others in their own battles with cancer.
