ANAHEIM, CA, April 27, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- After witnessing one incident of a child's mistreatment of a dog, it did not take long for Orange County animal lover Lisa Wiehebrink to realize empathy through the human-animal bond must be gained early in life. And she let the dogs become the teachers.
Wiehebrink created Tails that Teach and pulled from real life examples to write a series of children's books with titles such as Love Me Gently and Gray Whiskers that aim to teach kindness, compassion, and empathy. Educators have welcomed the books into their curriculum and they have become part of many programs that reach children outside of the classroom as well.
In 2018, the successful author and advocate went on to establish National Rescue Dog Day on May 20, to build a broader awareness of her message. And this year she has expanded it further with the "adoption" of a "To the Rescue" campaign to help shelters throughout the country earn much needed funds for ongoing costs of housing, veterinary care, food and facility maintenance for the comfort and well-being of pets awaiting their forever homes.
Powered by Petco Love and BOBS of SKECHERS, Wiehebrink received the support to offer funds to 10 shelters selected throughout the country to submit videos sharing their "greatest need" stories, all of which are now posted at the website www.nationalrescuedogday.com. By a public vote, which began April 20 and continuing through May 10, the winners will be selected with first place receiving $10,000, second place receives $5,000 and third place receives $2500. All remaining shelters will receive $1,000 each and will be presented with their checks in person on May 20.
They include: Austin Humane Society (Austin, TX), Nebraska Humane Society (Omaha, NE), Paws4ever (Mebane, NC), Roanoke Valley SPCA (Roanoke, VA), Humane Society of Imperial County (El Centro, CA), Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League (West Palm Beach, FL), Old Friends Senior Dog Rescue (Mount Juliet, TN), Seattle Humane Society (Seattle, WA), Pickens Humane Society (Liberty, SC) and Muttville (San Francisco, CA)
Wiehebrink said " Animal shelters are unsung heroes, and they provide services with a compassionate heart and one goal in mind—to find homes for countless animals who deserve a second chance. We hope this creates awareness on a broader level so that people will think about supporting their local shelters even if they are not able to rescue or adopt a pet, they can help rescue the organizations"
She is also helping create local awareness with a tie into National Rescue Dog Day with special event on Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brewheim in Anaheim located at 1931 E. Wright Circle. The free family event will include pet adoption organizations, kid's activity and play area, Anaheim Police Department K9 Unit Demonstration, and vendors with animal related products. Every child in attendance will receive a free Tails that Teach book.
