Who Is Eligible?

The proposed legislation would allow anyone exposed to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune between Aug. 1, 1953 and Dec. 31, 1987 to file an injury claim in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Historically, many lawsuits were barred due to North Carolina's 10-year statute of repose, which prevented victims from taking legal action if more than 10 years had passed since their toxic exposure.

Toxic Water at Camp Lejeune

Exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride in the water at Camp Lejeune led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conclude that Marines, Naval workers, civilians, residents, infants, and children are at a greater risk of developing diseases such as:

• Kidney cancer
• Multiple myeloma
• Leukemias
• Adverse birth conditions
• Other health problems

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs also names eight presumptive conditions linked to toxic water exposure at Camp Lejeune, including bladder cancer, liver cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and other myelodysplastic syndromes.
