EWA BEACH, HI, May 23, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Valerie A. Cacho, MD, has been recognized as a 2022 Castle Connolly Top Doctor — the fourth year in a row she has received the Top Doctor honor. Only about 7 percent of the nation's licensed physicians are selected as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties.
Dr. Cacho is a sleep medicine physician who takes an integrative, mind-body approach to patient care. She founded her integrative sleep medicine practice, Sleep Life Med, in 2021 to help people improve their sleep health and overall wellness.
Dr. Cacho evaluates and treats conditions that include insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea (also called OSA or sleep apnea), snoring, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and circadian rhythm issues. She also has special expertise in women's sleep medicine, particularly in perimenopausal women.
Her offerings include integrative sleep consultations for both adults and children; at-home sleep studies to test for obstructive sleep apnea; and cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based approaches for insomnia. She believes in taking a natural approach to sleep health and does not prescribe sleeping pills for chronic use.
"Sleep is a foundational pillar of health," says Dr. Cacho. "Poor sleep can negatively impact many aspects of our health — including our mood, cognition, weight, and metabolism — and it can even increase our risk for cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes."
Better sleep can be transformational, she says, so "when an individual's sleep improves, they have more energy to make healthy choices, which can lead to improvements in other aspects of their overall health."
Much of her practice involves teaching people about the importance of prioritizing sleep and practical steps to attain high-quality sleep.
"It's my mission to serve my community by educating patients on the health benefits of sleep, with the hope they make it a priority in their lives," she says. "When we are better rested and have optimal sleep, the world is a brighter place to live in."
Dr. Cacho is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the fields of internal medicine and sleep medicine. Using telemedicine, she is able to serve patients in California as well as Hawaii. She speaks English and Spanish.
Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.
"It's such an honor to be recognized nationally and in my community for the care I provide to my patients," says Dr. Cacho.
Dr. Cacho earned her medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. She completed an internal medicine residency at Huntington Memorial Hospital; a sleep medicine fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; and an integrative medicine fellowship established by Dr. Andrew Weil, the founder of the specialty, at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson.
A recent past president of the Hawaii Sleep Society, Dr. Cacho co-edited Integrative Sleep Medicine, part of the Weil Integrative Medicine Library.
Among her other professional activities, Dr. Cacho serves as a sleep guide for Athletawell, an online wellness community for women, created by Athleta and its parent company Gap Inc.
