WESTCHESTER, NY, July 11, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The William L. Carter Foundation has awarded six students from Peekskill High School with the William L. Carter Community Leader Scholarship. The awarded students exhibit full determination for the mission of the William L. Carter Inspiration Program. These young people demonstrate compassion and respect for all of those she/he comes in contact with; a desire to uplift not only her/himself but also those around her/him; and are taking actionable steps to realize their future and present goals/dreams. The recipients are Joel Brown (to attend Pace University), Kyle Cousins (to attend Winston-Salem State University, Lamar Kingwood, (to attend Universal Technical Institute), Jackeline Sarcasari (to attend Princeton University), Arianna Suarez (to attend Barnard College), and Brianna Turner (to attend St. Joseph College).
The William L. Carter Foundation has been awarding scholarships to high school seniors in cooperation with the local school districts in Westchester County, New York since its formation in 2016 to honor the legacy of the late William L. Carter who was the Commissioner of Greenburgh Community Resources. Commissioner Carter was a hero in his community who continually sought to see the good in people, despite what their current circumstances, flaws, or past struggles may have been. Commissioner Carter's daily goal was to impact the lives of those around him in meaningful and positive ways, especially young people who he knew deserved the opportunity to realize and accomplish their dreams.
The William L. Carter Foundation is a mentoring program with the primary focus being to stare down the statistics of minority classed children and teens by teaching and mentoring to prepare them for college and career and to provide them with knowledge of their culture through the arts. The foundation was able to award four scholarships to graduating seniors from the Elmsford, Greenburgh, and Valhalla schools in Westchester, New York in the year of its inception in 2016. In addition to the mentoring program and scholarships, the foundation has sponsored the William L Carter Jazz Clinic offers young Jazz musicians eight weeks of perfecting their musical talent at no cost to them, as well as other events and programs for youth.
