COLUMBUS, OH, August 08, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Safdar N. Khan, MD, has been recognized as a 2022 Castle Connolly Top Doctor — the first time he has received the prestigious Top Doctor honor. Only about 7 percent of the nation's licensed physicians are selected annually as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties.
An orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Khan specializes in spine surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
He is both the Benjamin R. and Helen Slack Wiltberger Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery and the chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's spine program. He joined the OSU faculty in 2011.
Dr. Khan evaluates and treats — both non-surgically and surgically — a variety of issues and conditions that can affect the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
These include spinal sprains, strains, and fractures; degenerative spine and disc diseases; osteoarthritis and spondyloarthritis; spinal-cord compression; spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and ankylosis; tumors; and congenital deformities such as scoliosis, an area of special focus.
Using state-of-the-art technologies and in many cases, minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Khan performs procedures that include spinal fusion, fracture fixation, and discectomy.
"Not all spinal conditions need surgery for pain relief. I am grateful to work closely with our non-operative colleagues in finding innovative strategies to manage our patient's pain. However, when surgery is indicated, I use the least invasive methods to manage patients' spinal conditions."
Dr. Khan sees adult and pediatric patients at locations in Columbus and Dublin, Ohio.
"My goal is to treat patients like family members — to understand what they need and how I can help them to get back to living the life they envisage," Dr. Kahn says. "Spine surgery is particularly challenging. But by spending time and getting to know patients, I feel I can best tailor their treatment — surgical or nonsurgical — to optimize their outcome."
He also serves as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the OSU College of Medicine.
Dr. Khan is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.
"It is a great honor to be recognized by my peers as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor," Dr. Kahn says.
Dr. Khan earned his medical degree at The Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan. He completed a six-year orthopaedic surgery residency at University of California - Davis Medical Center and a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at Rush University Medical Center.
He speaks English, Hindi, and Punjabi.
