Effective January 1, 2022, in addition to the CMS POS code 02, CMS introduced a second telehealth Place of Service code, POS code 10.
ORLANDO, FL, August 30, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Inga Ellzey Billing Companies' Dermatology Billing Associates, the top-rated company providing outsourced billing services to dermatology practices nationwide, is alerting practitioners to additional changes recently made to the Telehealth Place of Service code.
Effective January 1, 2022, in addition to the CMS POS code 02, CMS introduced a second telehealth Place of Service code, POS code 10:
POS 10: Telehealth to a client located at home (does not apply to clients in a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility)
POS 02: Telehealth to a client who is not located at home.
"It is important to know that some carriers are on board while others are not. Practitioners should contact their contracted carriers or check their websites to determine their status on this issue," says Inga Ellzey. "Most dermatologists that are providing telehealth services have not been indicating in the medical record where the patient is calling from since the waivers removed the originating site requirements. It is now necessary to ask the patient where they are calling from and document it."
"When performing telehealth services, it is wise to communicate to your billers the POS. Additionally, be sure to append the 95 or GT, if needed, to identify the visit as a telehealth service. Basically, the definition of these codes is identical (telehealth service performed via video conferencing). It is up to the biller to determine which of these are preferred by the carrier.."
The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency has been extended to October 15th, 2022. Thus, telehealth waivers remain in effect. CMS has also proposed several policies regarding Medicare telehealth for calendar year 2023 that would extend the waiver flexibilities for 151 days after the end of the PHE. Practitioners can review the proposed rule for CY 2023 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule here.
