We wrote this book in the hopes that people will learn to be more responsible in bear country. This is the best time to teach about this as bears are seeking food to prepare for hibernation.
IDAHO FALLS, ID, September 30, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Green Kids Club, Inc., announced today the release of the latest in its "Environmental Hero" book series. This book, titled "Grizzly 399 and Her Four Hungry Cubs" is the third in a series about the world's most famous grizzly bear and her four most recent cubs. The story is written by Sylvia Medina, founder of Green Kids Club, with illustrations by Morgan Spicer and accompanying pictures by world-renowned nature photographer, Thomas D. Mangelsen.
Roaming Grand Teton National Park and surrounding areas in Wyoming, Grizzly 399 initially rose to fame in 2006 and 2007 for having triplets that were often seen near well-traveled roads in the Park. Then, in 2020, Grizzly 399 emerged from hibernation with a record four cubs in tow. At 26 years old, she has developed a habit of coming into areas with high levels of human activities, and over the years she has unfortunately brought her cubs along with her. This book highlights the story of 399 and how she spends the second summer of her cubs' lives teaching them how to get food so they are ready for hibernation. With five mouths to feed, this is no easy task, and she takes her cubs into areas where humans reside. She teaches them to eat foods that are easily accessible. This book teaches what we, as humans, need to do to manage our foods and trash so that bears and other animals do not become conditioned to getting food from us.
Author, and Founder of Green Kids Club, Sylvia Medina commented, "Sadly, this behavior has proven to be tragic. In July, officials in Wyoming had to euthanize one of the four cubs because it had gotten too used to being around humans and was engaging in what is called 'increasingly dangerous behavior.' He just stopped being afraid of people and was comfortable going quite close to them and their homes to access food. We wrote this book in the hopes that people will learn to be more responsible in bear country. This is the perfect time of year to teach about this as bears are seeking food to prepare for hibernation."
As with the previous two books about Grizzly 399, "Grizzly 399: The Story of a Remarkable Bear" and "Grizzly 399's Hibernation Pandemonium," Ms. Medina said, "We are grateful to have been able to continue our collaboration with renowned wildlife photographer, Thomas Mangelsen, who has chronicled the life of Grizzly 399 for decades through his striking photos." The Environmental Hero series are books featuring stories about animals and their survival, often with human heroes that help them on their journey. The stories take children on adventures while at the same time helping them to learn about natural resources, conservation, preservation and appreciation for animals and their habitats. The books are also usually written in collaboration or with the contribution of wildlife experts.
