Residents Medical Group Trains Graduates On Acing Interviews

Interviews are an essential part of the residency process and an opportunity for both program heads and students to assess their compatibility.

Nevertheless, it is a nerve-wracking phase in a medical graduate's pre-residency efforts. As an organization dedicated to providing the best support available to help medical graduates ace their interviews, Residents Medical Group has recently launched an online video series - Playbook - as part of its program.

What Interviews are All About
To many students, an interview is a way for the interviewer to assess whether or not the student is a good match for a job or program.

The truth is that an interview is a two-way assessment. While the interviewer may lead the process by making prompts through questions, the interviewee is also in a position to determine whether the position they are being interviewed for is a good option.

It is also a means for the interviewee to learn more about the position and the company or, in this case, the medical school or residency program.

Being interviewed by a program allows students to learn more about the school so they know exactly what to expect and how it will help with their long-term career goals.

Residents Medical Group recognizes this challenge. To help medical graduates with the challenge ahead of them, Residents Medical Group released their initial offering of Playbook videos in a series that targets this demographic.

The videos were released in September, in time for the preparation stage of medical students gearing up for their residency programs.

A live webinar was also released on October 6th. The webinar featured guest experts Dr. Raj Ramsamooj, Director of GME for The Everest Foundation and PD Emeritus at UC Davis, and Dr. Karthik Iyer, Dermatology Fellow Emeritus at George Washington University Hospital.

The webinar was hosted by Residents Medical Chief Development Officer Brian Barry.

In his short talk, Dr. Ramsamooj encouraged medical graduates to relax and take their time during the interview.

According to him, students need to show self-awareness, accountability, good communication skills, and the ability to self-assess.

Dr. Iyer, for his part, gave valuable advice on how to best answer tricky questions. He also advised students to believe in themselves, learn from their mistakes, and be proud of their achievements.

Leveraging Playbook
As part of its continuing efforts to help the best medical graduates move forward, Residents Medical also introduced 'Playbook.'

It is a video course series streamed online from the Residents Medical website. Playbook was designed to guide medical graduates on how best to leverage their residency and fellowship interviews and maximize their opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills.

To create Playbook and make it relevant to medical school graduates' needs, Residents Medical Group collated information shared by several experts in public speaking and interviews to provide students with the best advice on handling interviews.

Playbook also features recommendations from and interviews with professional tutors, program directors, and deans to provide students with real-world requirements and expectations.
