Gabrielle Catherine Stenholm Wins the Friedman & Simon Academic Scholarship

Currently a 1L at the University of Colorado Law, Gabrielle's essay on her work with incarcerated teenagers compelled and inspired our team to support her academic pursuits.

Gabrielle's essay discusses the complex nature of her work with the Gang Reduction Initiative of Denver. She leads into the essay with a poignant contrast between the nature of the young people she assists - playful and teasing - with the brushes with the law they've had even before the age of thirteen.

Gabrielle elaborates on the economic and social circumstances that have led the people she works with into their current conditions. She goes on to discuss how important the lives of the teenagers she works with are to her, as each teenager has the opportunity to flourish when provided with the proper resources.

Her essay also touches on her own experiences with financial and physical violence in Colorado. Gabrielle's grandmother endured financial instability for most of her life, and a friend lost his life to gun violence.
