Announcing Grace Callard as the Winner of the Underwood Law Community Leadership Scholarship

    MCKINNEY, TX, November 10, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Grace Callard, a first-year Western Carolina University student, is the Underwood Law Community Leadership Scholarship winner. Underwood Law Office awards the $1,000 award to a college-bound student embodying leadership qualities and working to improve their community.

Grace, a North Carolina native, says she will use the scholarship award toward her studies at Western Carolina University (WCU), where she will major in environmental science with a minor in emergency and disaster management. She expects to complete her studies and graduate in May 2026. "I am grateful to Underwood Law Office for helping me achieve my dreams," she says.

WCU Student Serves in Various Roles

Grace says she draws much of her inspiration from others. Her impressive and steadfast commitment to serving others got the scholarship committee's attention. She helped the local YMCA, her neighborhood swim team, and the pre-kindergarten students attending her former elementary school, where her mother teaches. She enjoyed her time with them and keeps the sentiments the children shared with her during their time together.

"With pre-k, I have the honor of being able to read with some of the students. I spend roughly an hour after school reading to them to help their engagement, listening skills, and identification skills. I get the pleasure of getting to see these kids grow in their learning. To me, that's the most meaningful part of volunteering at the school," she shares in her scholarship essay.

Grace also worked with children ages 5 through 10 on a summer league swim team, sharing her knowledge and encouraging the young swimmers to exhibit sportsmanship and good behavior.

"Grace often took initiative to take on tasks that she saw needed doing. Her willingness to go above and beyond what was expected makes her stand out from the crowd," says a recommendation letter supporting her scholarship application. "Her contribution created a positive ripple effect from the coaches to the swimmers and onto the parents who participated on the summer swim team."

Scholarship Winner Has Firefighter Aspirations

Grace recently joined the swim club at Western Carolina University. She's also joining the Jackson County Rescue Squad, where she says she will develop skills she will need as she creates a career in fire rescue.

"After graduating, I hope to become a firefighter. I hope to attend a fire academy and later become involved in urban search and rescue," she says.
