BOCA RATON, FL, December 26, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Total Health, a medical information company that produces tailored content, courses, and conferences for oncology healthcare providers, today announced a world-class panel of speakers and presentations for the 8th Annual West Oncology Conference to be held February 4–5, 2023 in Memphis, Tennessee.
Hosted in partnership with West Cancer Center & Research Institute, the region's comprehensive leader in adult cancer care and research, delivering a complete continuum of care to more than 40,000 individuals annually, this year's conference will present practice-changing data to not only improve clinical outcomes for patients but promote equity in healthcare. According to the National Cancer Institute, certain population groups suffer more from cancer and its effects in the U.S. For most cancers, people of Black ancestry have the highest death rates and shortest survival rates of any racial group in the U.S.
As a Black doctor from the island of Dominica in the West Indies, West Cancer Center's Dr. Gregory Vidal, MD, PhD observed firsthand the health inequities in underserved communities. This motivated him to pursue medicine and fueled his efforts to reduce healthcare disparities and improve access to the best care for all patients.
"I'm passionate about ensuring equitable access to healthcare remains a priority, particularly in the Oncology setting," said Dr. Vidal. "As a medical community, we have begun to make strides to address the inequities, but there is still significant work to be done. This is our duty to all patients."
Dr. Vidal, along with West Cancer Center's Bradley Somer, MD and Jason Chandler, MD, will serve as program chairs for the two-day conference, which will feature presentations and panel Q&A discussions, including such current topics as "Clinical Research: Shortening the Gap and Improving Representation," "Cancer Moonshot and Groundshot: Addressing Inequities in Cancer Care," and "New Drugs in Oncology: Access and Affordability in Care."
"We're thrilled to showcase such renowned thought leaders who are deeply committed to improving healthcare equity in cancer care, enhancing access to quality cancer care, and reducing disparities in healthcare delivery for all patients," said Sarah Louden, Founder and Executive Director of Total Health.
The conference will also feature Edith Peterson Mitchell, MD, MACP, FCPP, as a speaker. Dr. Mitchell is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology and Program Leader in Gastrointestinal Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University, Associate Director of Diversity Programs for the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson and Director of the Kimmel Cancer Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities, and will be presenting "Workforce Diversity—Racial, Ethnic, and Sexual Orientation Equality" on February 5.
"A highly decorated Brigadier General of the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Mitchell is a legend in her own right. She's spent her career advocating for individuals in medically underserved areas and we're so honored to have her as a presenter," added Louden.
