Sevenish Law Announces the Winner of the Surviving and Moving on After a Motorcycle Accident Scholarship

Purdue University Freshman Will Use $2,500 Award Toward Accounting Studies

"I was very young at the time of Dad's accident, but it was a scary time for my family," Landrum says.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, February 01, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sevenish Law Firm, P.C. congratulates Keagan Landrum, the winner of its Surviving and Moving on After a Motorcycle Accident Scholarship. Landrum, a freshman accounting major at Purdue University – West Lafayette, will use the $2,500 award toward his studies.

The law firm's founder, Randall Sevenish, is the Lawyer Who Rides and is passionate about motorcycle riding. The firm created the scholarship to promote motorcycle safety awareness for those who ride and motorists who share the road with them.

Landrum's Connection to a Motorcycle Accident

Sevenish Law Firm, P.C.'s motorcycle scholarship attracted Landrum's attention because he knew how a motorcycle accident could change a family's life. His father suffered third-degree burns and soft-tissue injuries after hitting a deer while riding a motorcycle in 2006.

"I was very young at the time of Dad's accident, but it was a scary time for my family," Landrum says.

At the time of the accident, Landrum's father taught industrial arts at a local high school and worked part-time at a motorcycle repair shop. One early summer morning, after patching up the back tire of a Honda CBR 600 Smokin' Joe Race Replica sport bike, he took it out on a test run to make sure the repair held up. On the ride home, a deer suddenly jumped out of the brush into his father's path, making it nearly impossible for him to stop in time.

Landrum's father launched over the deer, landing on the road with his arms extended and palms out. The impact of the collision caused injuries, but luckily, most of the impact to his father's head was absorbed by the helmet he was wearing.

Wearing a Helmet Can Make All the Difference in a Motorcycle Accident

Landrum, who was 3 years old when the accident happened, says his father was able to go home from the hospital the same day of the accident. Still, he would take the rest of the summer to heal from burn injuries that left him unable to do simple tasks involving his arms and hand. He also required weeks-long care for the swelling in his ankles, hoping to avoid infection and permanent scar tissue buildup.

Although the accident happened years ago, Landrum's father says wearing a helmet saved his life. It is the advice he gives to anyone who rides a recreational vehicle.

"He would almost certainly not have survived without a helmet and says that nothing gained from not wearing a helmet is worth more than your life," Landrum says.

Student Athlete Excels in High-School Academics and Sports

Landrum graduated from Huntington North High School in Indiana with a 4.15 grade point average (GPA). He graduated fifth of 287 students. The scholar-athlete also played three years of varsity football, two years of all-conference, and served as team captain. He also played two years of varsity baseball and served as a student athletic board member and 10-year 4-H member.
