New book shines spotlight on Latinx Actor Training

LATINX ACTOR TRAINING

NEW HAVEN, CT, March 01, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "This book was born out of the urgent need to address the inequities in academia and the industry as Latinx representation on stage and screen remains disproportionately low."
- Cynthia Santos DeCure and Micha Espinosa

The challenges Latinx actors experience when training often lead to diminished opportunities, less visibility, and ongoing struggles. In their new book, Latinx Actor Training (Routledge; $49.59; on sale March 3, 2023), Professors Cynthia Santos DeCure and Micha Espinosa sound a call for action to center Latinx narratives and creatives in actor training and to stop the systemic erasure of language and identity. Latinx/e representation remains disproportionately low on stage and screen for Latinx creatives, and pervasive and damaging stereotypes continue. This collection seeks to offer pathways to transform actor training and change the industry.

With a foreword by Jorge Huerta, the leading authority in Chicano and US Latino/a theatre studies, and 25 chapters from experts and leading voices in theatre, film, television, and the academy, the book redefines the scope of the Latinx community and perceptions of Latinx actors. Honoring the diversity of the Latinx/e community, the book offers a range of writing styles and includes discussions and usage of Spanish and Spanglish in order to bring visibility to language variance, identity, and heritage practices.

Santos DeCure, Espinosa, and 21 uniquely experienced contributors offer new and historical perspectives, culturally responsive pedagogies, and pathways for career success. Latinx Actor Training empowers the community and serves as a blueprint for a more inclusive industry.
